My Marissa: Home Again in Oak Branch Woods by Kimberly Shriner

Author's Notes

The role of the author of animal fiction is a difficult one, as are the responsibilities that accompany it. Going beyond the common theme of "animal vs. man" and children's literature were the first of many obstacles I cleared in order to try and close the gap between audiences and issues.

On "versus"... In the Oak Branch Woods™ series, I have illustrated both the good and bad in both the people and animals present in my stories. The challenges they face and the decisions they make determine their roles, not whether they are rabbits, squirrels, or humans. In the beginning, I credited my stories as having no heroes and no villains. I have since learned how to include both traits, without segregating characters, groups, or species.

On human characters... All too often, the human characters present in such stories are considered secondary by readers, creating the question of whether this was the intent of the author. Not so in Oak Branch Woods™, as the people in my stories were never purposely repressed, being not only essential to the overall plots, but with challenges of their own to face, and are as devotedly-developed as the animals and their situations. A good writer does not give less than one hundred percent to any character or storyline.

On parallels... Its is often assumed of animal stories that the characters and their situations are meant to subtly represent aspects of human society. To answer the question, there were no such intentions when writing the Oak Branch Woods™ novels. In my books, rabbits represent rabbits, squirrels represent squirrels, etc., and the circumstances they face are unique to each species and individual character. Both my human and animal characters do however possess the same basic emotions, allowing those who read my books to be able to relate, varying with each individual reader.

On age ranges... I invite readers of all ages to enjoy my work; the presence of animal characters is not meant to appeal only to children. My stories would not be the same had any of the books' more mature/graphic content been left out. For all practical purposes, I would recommend my stories to readers ages 14 and above, not just because of the content, but also because of the painstakingly-detailed storylines.

On "the issues"... In the excerpts telling of my books' summaries, the characters, and even the author, the awareness of animal issues is always present, and rightfully so. Those addressed in the Oak Branch Woods™ books illustrate the life-and-death struggles the animal inhabitants face, but do not stop there. As the novels develop, the deeper issues become the relationships between the characters, both human and animal, in response to the changing world, resulting in stories that can be appreciated and enjoyed by all, without having to choose sides.

Dreams... It's an age-old question...why does a writer write? Anyone who's written a story or a kept a journal can probably answer that. Writing is a means of self-expression as well as an outlet for working out one's thoughts. You don't have to be a published author to have experienced either...so the real question should be "why does a writer publish"?
At any given time, you can turn on the radio and hear your favorite song, or sit down and watch an old, familiar rerun on television, or walk into a store and find the same toys you've loved since childhood. But how often do we realize that each of those times, we are hearing, seeing, experiencing, and enjoying someone else's creation...and just how often our lives are touched by the dreams of others.
All of my life, I've watched reruns, loved characters, and followed stories, but only recently have I begun to realize that each of these things I've enjoyed are all the products of a dream...the dream of someone wishing to share it with others. Most of us can only imagine how these individuals feel, knowing that their work is being enjoyed time and time again.
Oak Branch Woods™ is my dream. Until I decided to publish, I've never shared my writing with anyone. But knowing that somewhere there are those who have come to admire and enjoy my stories, my characters, and my messages as much as I enjoy the work of others, then I have achieved my dream as a published author.

As a writer, it's important for me to be able to maintain open dialog with readers (authors are real people after all...real as opposed to 'celebs'), so I'd love to hear from you! Please tell me what you think! What did you like best? Do you have a favorite character? How did you hear about Oak Branch Woods™? Was this site helpful in your decision to purchase a book? Anything you'd like to share, please e-mail me @ kimsites@verizon.net. Thanks!
