In a school report, Evelien Van Gelder who chose the topic 'animals', was asked to explain what the topic is all about, why it was chosen, how it related to her life, what she hoped to learn, etc. This assignment included reporting on two books relating to the topic, and writing biographies on a British author and an American author (unrelated to those who wrote the two other books) who write about animals. I was chosen as the American author!
Evelien's segment from the report is as follows:
* An American author
Kimberly Shriner
I learned about this author when I was searching on Google. She has written two books in the Oak Branch Woods novel series, a series of books about animals.
I decided to contact this writer to learn more about her and her books. Our email correspondence can be found on the page of all sources used.
She was very friendly and I hope to be able to read her books one day.
Kimberly Shriner was born on the 20th of June 1974. She grew up on the Jersey Shore. Kimberly studied teaching, but has always found her real passion in writing, creating, and issues concerning animals. Aside from writing, Kimberly's passions include drawing, collecting My Little Pony, Japanese animé (including Pokémon), Star Trek, and enjoying every minute of the 80s retro wave.
She is the author of the Oak Branch Woods novel series, which she has been working on since 1994. In sharing her writing, she hopes to raise awareness among readers about those issues that are most important to her.
So far she has written three books in the Oak Branch Woods series. Her first book is called 'My Marissa: Home again in Oak Branch Woods' and the second one is called 'Jaya and Mina: New Ground in Oak Branch Woods.' Her third book is not yet published.
Kimberley now lives in Hackettstown, NJ with her husband Alan, a cat and a rabbit. She has several websites including 'Heartbeat City' - a Site about The Cars (her first site, founded in 1996), 'We All Live in a Pokémon World...' (an essay written in defence of Pokémon), and a site dedicated to her Oak Branch Woods novels, where you can read about the stories and characters and order the books online.
A little bit more information about the books of Kimberly Shriner
* About the Oak Branch Woods series
The Oak Branch Woods series brings to life stories of survival, compassion, and sacrifice, seen through the eyes of both the animals and people who live and work in the time-worn forest. The struggle to raise families and maintain friendships is a difficult one for Oak Branch's animal inhabitants when faced with land development and overpopulation while the people responsible for their forest home face challenges of their own in and outside Oak Branch as they decide the fate of the creatures, often times with opposing views. The lives of Marissa, Bobbin, Jaya, Tracker, Laura, Jack, and the others are continuously shaped by world around them in the most uncertain of times.
(The remainder of the segment consisted of the summaries found on the back of both books.)
Other segments of Evelien's report included her thoughts on dogs (her favorite animal), pets, vegetarianism, and Greenpeace. The other book-related segments of her report included:
Books (to report on by choosing two of ten given tasks):
- "Lady, my life as a bitch" by Melvin Burgess
- Task: Think about a motto that fits the main character of your text. Use a well-known quotation or invent a motto yourself. She uses an extract from the text that proves this.
- Task: While reading your book, think of answering five of the following questions and take some notes. After having read the book, make a text of your notes. Probe that you've read the book by referring to your book often.
You can't be wrong in your responses, so take some risks and be honest. Relate your personal experiences which connect with the plot, characters, or setting. Don't just summarize the plot. Let us hear your voice!
A British author:
- George Orwell (author of "Animal Farm")
A poem about the chosen topic:
- "Frosty died last December" (a poem about the author's beloved dog)
