After creating some of the most eye-catching videos on the 80's from their Heartbeat City album, the videos they made to do along with the singles from "Door To Door" were surprisingly disappointing. Though not entirely the Cars' fault, the same thing happened to these two videos that happened to a lot of 80's bands' videos as the decade went on. And with that, these were also the Cars' last.
In this video, the Cars are sent on a mission in outer space to seek out new female life after the destruction of Earth. With its limited special effects and filmy appearance, the video seems to be earlier than from 1987. By the end, they encounter strange alien life forms that inhabit a nearby vessel. And though it's filled with typical science fiction cliches, the Cars manage to create a video that's funny, but a little too corny and low-tech to reach the same popularity as their others.
The second video off of "Door to Door," was based on the provocative automotive single, "Strap Me In". Unfortunately, like many other early 80's bands, the Cars also started to change the style of their videos to fit the time. Not actually participating in the storyline, the Cars are seen performing in a distant black and white desert while a woman running down the street with a suitcase and children with handfuls of balloons act out a seemingly dramatic story. "Strap Me In" is definitely a Cars' video that does not depict the lyrics, or the atmosphere, for that matter, of the audio. But I guess we can always leave the story behind that song up to the imagination since the video itself doesn't tell us much. Paulina Porizkova is also featured in the video as one of seral women getting ready in a powder room.
