After the huge collection of So Soft Ponies in Year 4, five more were added in Year 5 to complete the set. Like last year, they had the same "fuzzily" soft bodies and pastel colors. Each So Soft Pony came with a either a brush, comb, or hairpick, and hair ribbon.
Taffy (Earth pony) is white with (straight, standard-length) dark pink hair, and purple eyes. Her symbol is three pink wrapped candies.
Angel (Earth pony) is aqua with curly (standard-length) aqua hair, and dark turquoise eyes. Her symbol is three orange & turquoise angel fish swimming through the water.
These new So Soft Ponies were some of the first to show off some of the new poses introduced this year. Hippity Hop from Year 4 was also included in this set. In French, So Soft Ponies are called Pouliches Si Douces.
This year, Twinkle-Eyed Ponies returned following their original set in both early and late Year 4. There were five new ponies added, all in new poses. Of course, they all had the sparkling jeweled eyes and multi-colored hair like last year. Each Twinkle-Eyed Pony came with a either a brush, comb, or hairpick, and hair ribbon.
Quackers (Earth pony) is white with curly (standard-length) blue/green/yellow/dark pink hair. Her eyes are bluish-green jewels, and her symbol is a yellow & orange duck holding an umbrella.
Tic-Tac-Toe (Earth pony) is yellow with (straight, standard-length) red/dark pink/deep green/green hair. Her eyes are pinkish-orange jewels and her symbol is a pink & green unfinished tic-tac-toe game.
Speedy was brought back from Year 4's later set of Twinkle-Eyed Ponies.
Twice as Fancy Ponies were the first really new ponies from Year 5. Their special feature was that their symbol, that traditionally only covered each side of their hips, now extended to covering both of their sides and their backs. Some of their symbols were connected; some were not. They even had a little extension of their symbol either on their forehead or under one eye. Twice as Fancy Ponies each came with a brush, comb, or hairpick and hair ribbon. In the UK, Twice As Fancy Ponies were called Party Ponies.
Love Melody (Earth pony) is purple with (straight, standard-length) pink hair, and magenta eyes. Her symbol is pink hearts stung together with white ribbons; she also has two smaller hearts & ribbon under her right eye.
Sugarberry (UK name: Strawberry Fair; Earth pony) is white with curly (standard-length) red hair, and blue eyes. She is covered with strawberries that are attached by green twisting vines; she also has a strawberry on her forehead.
The Twice As Fancy Ponies were all given babies in a mail-in offer in Year 7, half of which were of a different type of pony than their mothers. Also, in Year 6, another set of six Twice As Fancy Ponies were introduced.
The Princess Ponies were an important collection of Year 5, with several different pony princesses to follow in the future. This set of Princess Ponies are characterized by the strands of shiny tinsel in their hair (all straight and standard-length) and the shiny, multi-colored raised medallions that were their symbols. Each Princess Pony also came with a glittered hairpick with stars, gold-trimmed ribbon, sparkling magic wand, damsel hat with raised silver-glittered shapes & gold-trimmer streamers. Each Princess also came with a Bushwoolie friend. Although Bushwoolies were introduced in Year 3 on TV, they were not produced until this year, and they only came with the Princess Ponies. Each Bushwoolie each wore a crown that matched their eye color (and the stone in their crown matched their body color), and they came in three different poses. Princess Ponies were also sold in the U.K. under different names, and came with baby dragons instead of Bushwoolies. Note: Hat colors not photographed are not confirmed, and are listed as shown in the Year 5 US MLP booklet, however, none of the confirmed colors match the colors in the illustrations.
Princess Serena (UK: Princess Aquamarine; Earth pony) is aqua with pink hair (w/gold tinsel), and dark pink eyes. She has a pink heart-shaped medallion with a pink jewel heart in the center surrounded by smaller green jewels. She wears an aqua hat (w/teardrops & hearts and pink streamers) [not purple as shown in booklet] and came with a purple wand. Her Bushwoolie's name is Cheery, and he is pink with a purple crown and eyes.
Princess Primrose (UK name: Princess Ruby; Earth Pony) is pink with blue hair (w/pink tinsel), and blue eyes. Her symbol is a blue butterfly-shaped medallion with a pink oval jewel in the center surrounded by smaller gold jewels. She wears a yellow hat and came with a purple wand. Her Bushwoolie named Chumster, and he is yellow with a blue crown and eyes.
The Princess Ponies and these Bushwoolies were featured in a later episode of "My Little Pony" called "The Quest of the Princess Ponies", where they are fighting over which one of them should be queen. Their magic wands are stolen by Lavan who means to use their magic to turn himself into a crystal being and rule Ponyland. In Year 6, a new set of Princess Ponies came out, but without Bushwoolies and with a different style of hair.
In Year 5, four more Flutter Ponies (French: Pouliches Voltigeuses; also sold in Canada) were introduced. This was also the last year for Flutter Ponies. They came in new poses with bolder colors, and symbols other than flowers; they all have curly hair with long manes. They also had a small version of their symbol on either their cheek of forehead, like last year. Their wing attachments were sightly different, with a stronger clear piece of plastic on the end, but that didn't stop the wings from breaking. Each Flutter Pony came with a metallic ribbon and hair pick.
Wind Drifter (French: Zéphyr) is yellow with green hair, and turquoise eyes. Her symbol is a purple & turquoise wind mill, with the same picture, only smaller, on her forehead.
After in introduction of Lucky, the Stallion in a 1986 mail offer, it wasn't long before an entire set of male ponies was released. But while Lucky was a little colt, The Big Brother Ponies were big rugged guys, and larger than the female ponies. The Big Brothers are all Earth ponies and are easily recognizable by the long, molded Clydesdale-style hair on their hooves. They have standard-length manes and tails (curly or straight), and a colored streak in their mane (like some unicorns have); they were made in three different poses. Their symbols depicted boyish hobbies and sports and they each a matching hat and colored bandanna (w/white paisley print) around their necks. Each Big Brother Pony also came with a brush or comb. In the U.K., they were called the Adventure Boy Ponies and some had different names.
4-Speed (UK name: Trucker) is pale blue with straight dark blue hair w/pink mane streak, and pinkish-purple eyes. His symbol is a pink & purple dump truck. He wears a yellow hard hat (with a blue heart design on the front) and a purple bandanna.
Slugger (UK name: First Base) is pinkish-purple with curly white hair w/dark pink mane streak, and dark blue eyes. His symbol is a white baseball, white bat, & aqua glove. He wears a light blue baseball cap (with a white outline of a baseball with "MLP" in the center) and a light blue bandanna.
The Big Brother Ponies were introduced in the My Little Pony episode "Somnambula" where they returned from a race around the world only to find all the Little Ponies gone and later found in a sleeping trance.
