Year 4 was the year when My Little Pony made an incredible comeback after a very slow Year 3. With more new new ponies appearing in 1985, than ever before, My Little Pony came in to 1986 with a movie, followed by a TV series, and even extra ponies as the year went on. This year marked the end of the round scented puffy stickers that came with each pony and replaced them with grape-scented body sticker in the shape of each pony. However, toward the end of Year 4, some ponies came with a sticker featuring another pony, and not herself. Year 4 gave us the long-running So Soft Ponies, Flutter Ponies, and Megan's sister, Molly, all making their big-screen debut in "My Little Pony: The Movie", making My Little Pony more poplar than ever before! (Note: Pony's hair is straight unless otherwise noted.)

Of all the Little Ponies ever made, there were more So Soft Ponies than any other in Year 4 alone. So Soft Ponies have "nuzzily" or "fuzzily" (depending on the time of the commercial) flocked bodies and came in pastel colors of pink, blue, lavender, yellow, and more. Not only were So Soft Ponies a whole new line of characters for My Little Pony's movie, and TV show, they also allowed some of the more obscure ponies from Year 3 to come back with a whole new look. Generally, so soft fur is lighter than the pony's actual body color, and creates a dramatic difference between the Year 3 and Year 4 versions. All the So Soft Ponies came with a brush or comb, ribbon, and scented body sticker.

So Soft Ponies

Heart Throb (pegasus) is a paler shade of lavender (than the original) with curly dark pink hair, and blue eyes. Her symbol is a group of pink hearts, but the silver wings that were on the original Heart Throb's hearts cannot be seen on the So Soft version. In some drawings, the hearts are shown with blue wings, but on the TV series, she is shown with just hearts (with no wings) as her symbol. Baby Heart Throb's symbol is also hearts (with no wings) to match her So Soft mother.
Cherries Jubilee (Earth pony) is peach with curly coral hair, and green eyes. Her symbol is pink (more pink than red) cherries with darker green stems.
Gusty (unicorn) is white with deep green hair (w/red streak) and more yellowy-green eyes (than the original). Her symbol is a group of purple (as oppose to the original's magenta) leaves.

So Soft Ponies

Posey (Earth pony) is yellow with pink (that can fade to white) hair, and green eyes. Her symbol is a group is of pink flowers w/green stems. The pink and green colors of my So Soft Posey's flowers is significantly darker than my original Posey's flowers, but Posey may have also been made with other shades of pink or white flowers.
Surprise (pegasus; no notable changes from original) is white with curly chartreuse hair and light purple eyes. Her symbol is a group of purple balloons with pink strings.
Lickety-Split (Earth Pony) is paler shade of pinkish purple (than the original), curly pink (that can fade to white) hair, and purple eyes. Her symbol is a group of vanilla ice cream cones (white w/purple cones).

There were also new So Soft Earth Ponies, Unicorns, and Pegasi, all showing off new poses for Year 4.

So Soft Ponies

Lofty (pegasus) is yellow with curly yellow hair, and magenta eyes. Her symbol is a pink hot air balloon surrounded by orange stars.
North Star (pegasus) is pink (darker body under fur) with purple hair, and dark blue eyes. Her symbol is a purple & blue compass.
Ribbon (unicorn) is light blue (darker body under fur) with chartreuse hair w/neon orange streak, and yellow-green eyes. Her symbol is a white ribbon tied in a bow.

So Soft Ponies

Truly (Earth pony) is white with curly dark pink hair, and light blue eyes. Her symbol is a green dove carrying a branch, surrounded by pink hearts. She has a hole in each of her two back hooves that fit into a round stand, that she comes with, that supports her rearing pose.
Magic Star (Earth pony) is yellow with green hair, and purple eyes. Her symbol is a magic wand (pink star w/green handle) with a pink ribbon tied around it. She has a hole in each of her two back hooves that fit into a round stand, that she comes with, that supports her rearing pose.

So Soft Ponies

Cupcake (Earth pony) is white with curly aqua hair, and light purple eyes. Her symbol is a group of dark pink & orange cupcakes.
Wind Whistler (pegasus) is pale blue (darker body under fur) with pink (that can fade to white) hair, and light purple eyes. Her symbol is a group of pink whistles.
Buttons (unicorn) is pale lavender with curly blue hair w/dark pink streak, and blue eyes. In illustrations, such as the MLP TV series, her symbol shown as three large pink buttons and four blue stars, however, only the buttons can be seen on her body (the blue stars you see here were drawn on). Deflocking has shown that Buttons has NO stars as part of her actual symbol. Discrepancies in her symbol are even more evident with the non-So Soft version of Buttons.

So Soft Ponies

Paradise (pegasus) is white with curly neon orange hair, and green eyes. Her symbol is two green palm trees and an orange crescent moon.
Shady (Earth pony) is pink (dark neon pink under fur) with curly chartreuse hair, and blue eyes. Her symbol is a group of sunglasses (blue frames w/white lenses).

Some of these ponies were released outside the U.S., but they were not So Soft including Shady, Buttons (mentioned above), Wind Whistler, North Star, Magic Star, and Gusty (from U.S. Year 3) who were in a set labeled as "moveystars"/"vedettes from the film", all being featured in "My Little Pony: The Movie". Truly, Paradise, and Cupcake were also made in non-So Soft versions, but were not part of this set. The unicorns and pegasi of that set did not have glittery symbols, as expected.

Later in 1986, six new So Soft ponies were introduced. However, on all the cards and inserts, many of these ponies were shown in the wrong poses, with the wrong color hair, or as the wrong breed of Pony! Note that only the following two ponies were correctly portrayed in backcard and pamphlet pictures, but here, they have been photographed in their actual breeds and poses.

So Soft Ponies

Twist (unicorn) is dark purple (light fur, but dark body underneath) with neon orange hair w/light pink streak, and light purple eyes. Her symbol is a group of white pretzels. She was originally pictured as with pale orange hair and no steak in her mane.
Bouncy (pegasus) is yellow with blue hair, and blue eyes. Her symbol is a multi-colored beach ball.
Skippity Doo (Earth Pony) is mint green with red hair, and sea green eyes. Her symbol is a pink jumprope. She has a hole in each of her two back hooves that fit into a round stand, that she comes with, that supports her rearing pose. In pictures, Skippity-Doo was shown as a pegasus.

So Soft Ponies

Hippity Hop (pegasus) is mauve (darker body under fur) with pink hair, and blue eyes. Her symbol is three white rabbits. Her picture was especially inaccurate, showing her not only as a unicorn, but in Posey's (trotting) pose. She returned in Year 5 with a new collection of So Soft Ponies.
Scrumptious (Earth pony) is white with curly yellow-green hair, and yellow-green eyes. Her symbol is a pink & green watermelon slice.
Fifi (unicorn) is pale blue with curly white hair w/dark pink streak, and blue eyes. Her symbol is three pink poodles. She was pictured as an Earth pony with no streak in her mane.

Twinkle-Eyed Ponies logo with Masquerade graphic

Twinkled-Eyed Ponies are a lovely collection of ponies with jewel-like eyes that sparkle in the light. All Twinkle-Eyed Ponies had multi-colored hair which set them apart from most other ponies of their time. All the Twinkle-Eyed Ponies Ponies came with a brush or comb, ribbon, and scented body sticker.

Twinkle-Eyed Ponies

Fizzy (unicorn) is sea green with curly pink/white/dark pink/deep green hair. Her eyes are pinkish-green jewels and her symbol is a group of pink w/white ice cream sodas.
Sweet Stuff (Earth pony) is pale blue with purple/dark pink/pink/white hair. Her eyes are a mixture of green, pink, and purple-colored jewels; her symbol is a group of pink & purple gumdrops. Sweet Stuff was the star of her own episode, "Sweet Stuff and the Treasure Hunt", where she is just looking for something to do, and encounters a very busy squirrel who has no time for games. Sweet Stuff's name in the UK name is Sweetie.
Whizzer (pegasus) is pink with curly dark purple/light blue/deep green/aqua hair. Her eyes are a mixture of blue, green, and purple-colored jewels; her symbol is a groups of pink w/purple beanies.

Baby Ponies with Beddy Bye Eyes logo with Baby Lickety-Split graphic

Year 4 was the second year for baby ponies, and in this year, they had their own special feature: Beddy-Bye Eyes that opened and closed. Beddy Bye Eyes are round inset eyes with a row of black eyelashes on top, and a colored (different from body color) eyelid above the eye. Each pony came with a variety of small accessories a including bottle (white w/colored ring), diaper (in its own box), pull duck, xylophone w/hammer, bib, (white w/colored trim & pink heart), ID necklace, and a feeding dish w/spoon. Larger accessories now featured high chairs and wagons. I am unsure about the smaller accessories that came with each individual ponies, so they will not be included in their descriptions. And as with all ponies, they came with a brush or comb, ribbon, and scented body sticker. Ironically, half these ponies had mothers who originated in Year 3.

Baby Ponies with Beddy-Bye Eyes

Baby Ribbon (unicorn) is blue with chartreuse hair w/neon orange streak, and blue eyes (w/dark blue eyelids). Her symbol is a white ribbon tied in a bow. She came with a pink wagon (w/aqua handle & wheels and yellow axles). Her other accessories included a yellow (w/pink wheels) pull duck, pink/blue/yellow/green/pink xylaphone (w/yellow wheels & blue hammer), bottle with green ring, and a white ribbon.
Baby Shady (Earth Pony) is neon pink with chartreuse hair, and aqua eyes (w/dark neon pink). Her symbol is three pairs of sunglasses (aqua frames w/pale pink lenses). She came with a pink playpen; I don't remember the pad color. In backcard pictures, she was shown with a highchair. Her other accessories included a blue ID necklace, blue-trimmed bib, yellow-rimmed bottle, duck pull toy, and a pink ribbon.
Baby Lickety-Split (Earth pony) is pinkish-lavender with pink hair, and pale purple eyes (w/pinkish-purple eyelids). Her symbol is three vanilla ice cream cones (white w/pink cones). She came with a yellow and pink high chair, not with a wagon as shown. Of all these Baby Ponies, Baby Lickety-Split was the most popular as she was the star of "My Little Pony: the Movie" and returned as a First Tooth Baby Pony in Year 5.

Baby Ponies with Beddy-Bye Eyes

Baby Gusty (unicorn) is white with deep green hair w/red streak, and sea green eyes (w/deep green eyelids). Her symbol is three purple leaves. She came with a purple high chair (w/yellow tray).
Baby Heart Throb (pegasus) is lavender with curly dark pink hair, and blue eyes (w/purple eyelids). Her symbol is three pink hearts, matching the wingless heart symbol that her So Soft mother now had. She came with a yellow playpen with a pink & white heart pad. Other accessories included a bib w/aqua trim.
Baby Lofty (pegasus) is pale yellow with yellow, and pale purple eyes (w/yellow eyelids). Her symbol is a pink hot-air balloon surrounded by orange stars. She came with blue wagon (w/yellow handle & wheels and white axles). Other accessories included a pink w/white ID necklace.

Outside the U.S., some of these ponies were made with regular (non-Beddy Bye) eyes which including Baby Heart Throb, Baby Gusty, Baby Lickety-Split, and Baby Ribbon. They also came with the same accessories as they had in the U.S. They were also sold with Beddy Bye Eyes in the U.K., only there, they were called Lullabye Eyes.
