Starbeam
In mid-2004, ponies began being divided into two categories: the regular sets are packages similarly to those we've seen up until now (unmarked Rainbow & Glitter Celebration, "New Friends", etc...) and those under the title "Friendship Ball." These special ponies are packaged in mainly royal purple boxes (descending onto the original reddish-pink), including the purple rope on the carry handle, and have a ballroom backdrop inside. Each box tells of the upcoming Friendship Ball and the excitement it brings to ponies hoping to be named Best Friend of the Year. They include many new faces, some old, in groups such as Evening Wear Dress-Up, Sparkle Ponies (my favorite) , Jewel Ponies, and more, plus playsets and accessories. Many Friendship Ball ponies are Target exclusives.

Sparkle Ponies

These beautiful yet modestly colored ponies are special because of the iridescent glitter sparkles on their faces (between the eyes and down to the nose) and lightly covering their Cutie Marks (hip symbol) - marked with a glittery heart sticker on the box. Another characteristic of the Sparkle Ponies is the smaller but decorated heart that wraps partially around one hoof, similar in design to their Cutie Mark. Sparkle Ponies also have iridescent tinsel in their single-colored hair, come with a brush with the raised bow design, and are worth 2 Pony Points each.

Each pony comes with a variety of shiny accessories (including clothes and jewelry), and a brush with the raised bow design. They are worth 3 Pony points each.

I found this next Dress-up pony in January 2005, months after all the other Friendship Ball ponies had been released, just as the Butterfly Island ponies began to come out. Wind Wisher was found at Toys R Us, but she was not marked as an exclusive and is also not pictured in any MLP booklet. Wind Wisher, who collects lucky charms, has a pearly pink body with purple & aqua hair. Her Cutie Mark (left hip) is two pinwheels (purple, aqua, yellow) in front of a white swirl and smaller aqua swirls. She has blue eyes with pink highlights and yellow hearts. Evening Wear Dress-up

Sparkleworks is wearing a light purple mesh tutu (2 ruffles) with a pink bow, purple tiara (shiny star decal), four pinkish-purple shoes (with pink butterfly designs), and a purple heart/swirl barrette (pink heart). Her brush is dark purple.

Sunny Daze (now in Minty's original pose), who does somersaults in her tiara, is otherwise the same colors as in previous versions; in this version, her sun Cutie Mark is on her right side and her orange heart is on her left hoof. Her two-tone purple eyes are less pink than the second release. Sunny Daze is wearing a long light pink cape covered in round pink sequins, pale pink tiara (shiny star decal), four pale pink shoes (with dark pink butterfly designs), and a two-tone pink flower-shaped hair elastic. Her brush is pale pink.

Twirling Fun/Ice Dancing

These two special ponies dance and twirl at Friendship Ball. Released in early 2004, a few different versions of these sets were released throughout the year with bonus ponies in limited areas, but the regular sets were the most widely available. Each pony fits into an oval base that can be placed into a larger wheeled base (light green grass design) that twirls when moves and a heart button that makes her attached pink tiara blink red. The outer base also has an upright dark pink My Little Pony heart logo surrounded by white flowers. Both Glitter Glide and Loop-de-La each wear a tutu and four shoes (only front shoes are removable one back shoe plugs into the base) and comes with a flower bouquet (transparent green leaves, light blue wrapper), and brush (with raised bow design). Other unique features of these ponies are that their manes are shorter that most ponies' and they have no hoof hearts, even though they are both pictured on the packages with decorative hearts. Their heads and mid sections both turn for a number of variations on their rearing pose. They also have no magnets in their front hooves. Each pony is worth 4 Pony Points.

Star Catcher
with "Dancing in the Clouds" video

Star Catcher with 'Dancing in the Clouds' video

Star Catcher is the very first pegasus in the 2003+ My Little Pony collection. Pegasus ponies are said to rarely appear in Ponyville, and an 'extra-special' encounter with this legendary creature is told of in her 20-minute video "Dancing in the Clouds." Star Catcher has a white (non-pearly) body with raised, pearly lavender swirls, diamond shapes and dots on her forehead, back (upper sides and between wings), and both right and left lower hind legs. Her mane is pink, blue, and white in alternating vertical streaks with pink tinsel; her tail is a mixture of these colors & pink tinsel. She has large, iridescent aqua foil wings on her back (non-removable). Her Cutie Mark (left hip) is a curved pink heart with a border of aqua stars and dots, covered with iridescent tinsel. Her heart (left hoof) is pink. She has blue eyes with a pale blue highlight and pink star. Star Catcher is in a new, unique rearing pose, which allows her to either lean over on all four feet or on two feet on metal surfaces, as her magnet is in her flat, left back hoof. Star Catcher is wearing a light purple tiara with a pink heart-shaped jewel in the center. She comes with a light pink brush with the raised bow design.

Skywishes dances in the clouds Best Friend of the Year
"Dancing in the Clouds" begins with Twinkle Twirl trying to think of a new dance for the Friendship Ball. Her good friend, Skywishes, decides to make an extra-special wish just for her to come up with a great idea. Believing in the catch-a-kite/get-your-wish superstition, Twinkle Twirl soon comes up with a new routine she calls 'Dancing in the Clouds', inspired by the roller coaster at the local fair. But unfortunately, during rehearsal, the other ponies have a hard time learning the complicated steps. Again, trying to help her friend, Skywishes hopes for the best and, in the process, meets Star Catcher, the legendary pegasus, who reveals the secret home of the pegasus ponies on Butterfly Island only to her. With the help of Star Catcher's butterfly friends, Earth pony Skywishes is able to experience what it's like to dance in the clouds and the butterflies follow her home to help out her friends. The show is a success, earning Twinkle Twirl the Best Friend of the Year award, but she gives her prize to Skywishes for all of her help, having made all her wishes for her.

"Dancing in the Clouds" features both newly released ponies such Gem Blossom and Desert Rose as well as earlier ponies like Rainbow Dash. There are also quite a few unknown ponies, including Coconut Cream as well as unnamed ponies. No word on whether they are upcoming releases. The video ends with and ad for a variety of ponies, accessories, and other MLP-related items available now, featuring the newly-worded "My Little Pony, My Little Pony" theme.

Twinkle Twirl's Dance Studio

Twinkle Twirl's Dance Studio

Twinkle Twirl, who quickly became a featured pony, has a pearly) pinkish-purple body. Her hair is light pink, orange, and dark pink. Her Cutie Mark (left hip) is a white sparkle with orange, purple, & dark pink swirls, surrounded by smaller sparkles and dots. The entire symbol has a glittery coating, like a Sparkle Pony's. She has light blue eyes with a double pink & white highlights, and a white sparkle and dark pink dot in each eyes. Twinkle Twirl is in a rearing pose, and the heart is on her left back hoof. It is a white heart with sparkles and dots on either side. On the box, the heart is shown on her front hoof, as it is in some books, and sometimes is not white. She is wearing a shiny dark pink mesh tutu.

Sparkle Ponies (set two)

The second set of four Sparkle Ponies came out about two months after the original set. Like the first set, each Sparkle Pony has a blaze of glitter from her nose to her forehead and lightly covering her Cutie Mark (hip symbol). They differ from the others in that they have multi-colored hair (no tinsel, number of colors vary) and the heart on their hoof is not the more elaborate design. They are still in early poses, come with a brush with the raised bow design, and are worth 2 Pony Points each. They are out before several of the ponies shown in the current booklet, though they are not shown, and were on Hasbro's official MLP site long before the first set.

Warm, inviting Peachy Pie has a pearly peachy-pink body with peach and white hair. Her Cutie Mark (right hip) is a yellow peach & coral flower with green leaves. Her eyes are green with a yellow green highlight and peach stars. Her heart (right hoof) is white and her brush is peach.
