Twenty years after their debut, My Little Pony celebrates its anniversary with a new line of ponies that will bring back childhood memories to collectors as well as introduce the joys of My Little Pony to a new generation. As children of the 80's are looking back to the toys of their past, My Little Pony is one of many favorites that also include Strawberry Shortcake, Care Bears, and He-Man. Unfortunately, the second generation of all of these characters, including My Little Pony, underwent too many drastic changes along with being reissued before we were ready to remember the 80's. The late 1990's Little Ponies lasted less than two years in the United States, leaving ponies released after 1998 for sale only in other countries. Now, in 2003, we're seeing third generations versions of 80's characters that are more true to the originals we first loved.

The new little ponies, overall, resemble their ancestors in that they have a similar shape to their face, almond-shaped eyes (though larger and more detailed, multi-toned with a tiny shape [usually a heart] in the pupil; some are more round while others are more slanted), and chubby legs with rounded hooves. Their bodies are slightly smaller and thinner, yet still with Kimono graphic realistic pony proportions. Their tails and standard length and their manes reach their feet. Each pony also has a symbol to match her name, however, it is only printed on one side of her body (hip, rump, etc); so far the side to which her head is turned. Other noticeable differences are folded ears, a small heart symbol (though pictured as two) on one front hoof, and a pink (shades vary) magnetic "My Little Pony" logo insert (that can be used to activate accessories in playsets) also in one front hoof. Like all My Little Pony packages, the new ponies and accessories feature points that can be used for future premium offers.

Eight ponies make up the first set, divided into two sets, though sets are only named in advertisements, not on the packages. Each individually packaged (exceptions noted below) in a clear plastic box with a rope handle and a description of the pony's individual personality and interests (see boxed pony below). Inside, the background image (a colorful outdoor setting) can be removed and combined with other packages to create a Ponyville (home of the new ponies) landscape. Each of these ponies is unique, with her own body and hair color scheme and unique pose. Many have a pearly luster to their bodies, individually noted below. Each comes with brush (with a raised bow design on the back; see close-up below), and a pony charm (translucent, solid-colored w/silver glitter; see close-up below) on a white iridescent 'friendship ribbon'. An insert featuring the complete line My Little Pony line is also included, along with a note from Pinkie Pie inviting MLP fans to see the new My Little Pony film coming to theaters in Fall 2003.

Rainbow Celebration Ponies

Rainbow Celebration Ponies are four of the first six ponies available in stores.
